Daisy Violet the bitch beast king
Sarah Assaad is a fourth year at UC Davis majoring in Theatre and minoring in Mathematics. In 2015, she made her debut at UC Davis inThe Government Inspector and most recently appeared in The Bluest Eye. Sarah is excited for the audience to meet the powerful Daisy Violet.
Naveen Bhat is a fifth-year Theatre and Dance and Cinema and Digital Media double major at UC Davis, returning for the second season of Ground & Field Theatre Festival in Daisy Violet The Bitch Beast King. They have appeared in Boy at Big Idea Theatre Company; Swimmersand Heathers The Musical at Studio 301 Productions.
Sophie Brubaker is a second-year student at UC Davis and thrilled to be in Ground & Field Theatre Festival. She has a fun little dream to act as her career, and some of her previous roles include one of three divas in Boxed Up: The Musical, Rae in the Unfortunates, and Evelyn in the Sky in the Deep book trailer. She loves and appreciates you lots.
Anne Homer is a second year English and Theater double major. She has appeared in productions of Clue and Les Minserables, as well asnumerous speech and poetry competitions. This is Anne’s first debut withUC Davis and she is thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the Ensemble this year for such a growing cause.
Sam Collier (playwright) is a playwright and poet. Other plays include A Hundred Circling Camps(2018 Goodman Playwrights Unit) and Thing with Feathers. She is the 2017-19 Writer-in-Residence with the National Writers Series of Traverse City, where she teaches in a high school writing program. MFA: University of Iowa.
Lisa Quoresimo (director, GFTF Founding Director) is assistant professor of musical theatre at Southern Utah University. She is an internationally produced composer and playwright, and an active director and performer. Her work has been seen at Berkeley Repertory Theatre (West Coast Premiere of An Octoroon), Shotgun Players, and the Brava Theatre, and she served as Artistic Director of the Kairos Theatre in New York City for many years. Heracademic publications include “Charlotte Charke, A Shilling, and aShoulder of Mutton: The Risks of Performing Trauma” in Theatre Topics (Nov 2016), “Joy and Meaning in Theatre Games” in Analog GameStudies (2015), and a forthcoming chapter in “Hamilton: History, Hip-Hop and Politics: Essays on the Afterbirth of a Nation.” She received her Ph.D. in Performance Studies from UC Davis in spring of 2018 and holds an M.A. from Carnegie Mellon University. She has also taught on the faculties of NYU and the Manhattan School of Music.
Charles Lavaroni (assistant director, ) is a junior studying Theater and English. Favorite recent credits include: Max Jacobs, Porter in On the Twentieth Century at Davis Shakespeare, Pippin in Pippin; Man in Near Love Songs at GFTF 2017; Queen Elizabeth in Richard III; Jackson in Gilbraltar; Lady Macbeth in Macbeth; Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; and Cornelius, u/s Ophelia in Hamlet at San Francisco Shakespeare. Stephanie Nielsen (Stage Manager) is a sophomore at UC Davis working towards degrees in managerial economics and theatre and dance. She has been dancing and performing for over 10 years. She is grateful to be able to stage manage Brisé and Daisy Violet The Bitch Beast King in this year’s festival.

Joelle Robertson (Production Stage Manager), a proud member of Actors Equity Association, is an actor, singer, director, and stage manager with a passion for producing theatre that spans over a decade. Her most recent producing project, Boxed Up: The Musical, performed last year at the Warehouse Artist Lofts and the concert version at Capital Stage. She has also professionally stage managed at Capital Stage for The Arsonists, The Thanksgiving Play and The Wolves. She also stage managed UC Davis production of The Bluest Eye. At Big Idea Theatre, she was a company member, stage managed and acted in many productions. Also at Big Idea, she directed the dark comedy Trevor and was from 2014-2016 she was Big Idea Theatre’s marketing director, producing a tremendous boost in audience size, press coverage, and general awareness of the company throughout the Sacramento Region. She also worked professionally from 2015-2016 with Unseen Heroes, the award winning Sacramento based event management and marketing firm, where she managed the celebrated Midtown Farmers Market, along with many other highly publicized and well received events.
Joseph Schupbach (Director - [un] Earthed, GFTF2018 Dramaturg) is a former artistic director of Barrel of Monkeys and an emeritus company member. He has been working with the organization since 2005 and served on staff for the organization for seven years in several roles. Schupbach is currently pursuing his MFA in Dramatic Art at UC Davis. He has directed projects with Barrel of Monkeys, Chicago Dramatists, Compass Players Redux, Akvavit Theatre, North Park University, UC Davis, Murakami Sound Machine, and InGen Productions, a company of which he is co-founder and associate artistic director. Joseph has assistant directed for The Ruffians and The Neo-Futurists and has performed all over Chicago.

Tristan Atkinson is a junior at UC Davis studying theatre. In the past, he has had a variety of roles in Sonoma State University’s productions of The Importance of Being Earnestand Hamlet. Usually in the background of the Department of Theater and Dance, Tristan is excited to be a part of the ensemble this year.

Alyssa Buchthal is thrilled to make her debut with Ground & Field Theatre Festival. Previously, you may have seen her in The Tale of the Sun, The Earth and the Moonwith Collaborative Stages. Alyssa has enjoyed acting in Light Delayand spearheading PR for the social media team with this year’s festival.
 
Ben Carter is a second-year theatre/psychology double major at UC Davis. Past credits: Pippin(u/s Charles/Lewis, ensemble), Bye Bye Birdie(Albert), Beauty and the Beast(Beast), and more. He's a board member for Studio301 (a student-run theatre club) and The Afterglow (UC Davis all-male a cappella group).
 
Anthony Castillon has been performing for the better part of two years and has been in seven shows including American Idiotand RENTwith the Children's Musical Theater of San Jose, and Gibraltarand Pippinwith the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance. He is current pursuing a major in theater.
 
Myah Daniels is a fourth-year Theatre & Dance minor. She is an assistant stage manager for Summertimeand was the assistant director for Parity. She is the director of Studio 301’s Musical Revue this quarter and has performed in over 15 shows as an actor.
 
Michelle DeMoss has been involved in theater for over 5 years. She is dedicated to the craft of storytelling either through acting or behind the scenes. She is currently working in the props department.
 
Joy Ding is a writer, teacher, and artist. She loves exploring different art forms and combining them in interesting ways. She is currently working on a short story collection exploring love, loss, and intimacy. Thank you to GFTF and the lovely people in the ensemble - it’s been wonderful! 
 
Ahash Francisgraduated from UC Davis this year with an English major and Theater and Dance minor. His previous work includes The Bluest Eye, Callus, and various devised works around the department.
 
Talia Friedenberg is a third-year Theater and Dance major. At UC Davis, she has performed in Pippin(Catherine), Ground & Field Theater Festival 2017 (Ensemble/Maddie in Hysterical!), and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike(Nina). Last spring, Talia made her professional acting debut as Ophelia in Hamletat the Marin Shakespeare Company. She is thrilled to be part of Ground & Field again this year!
 
Takeshi (James) Fujioka is an international student from Japan who has a great interest in theatre. He is currently exploring the possibilities of what an international student can do for theatre, and he is currently working as the theatre crew for the Ground & Field Theatre Festival. 
 
Ryan Gerberding is a recent graduate of UC Davis's Theatre and Dance program. He appeared in The Gambling Lady, Woyzeck, Lungs, Gospel According to First Squad,and Mr. Burns, A Post Electric Play, among others, with the Department of Theatre and Dance. He also directed two plays for Studio 301, a student theatre club on campus.
 
Mehdi Hajar has been involved with theater for four years and played various roles, on and off the stage. He has appeared in shows at Theatre at Granite Bay, including Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Unfortunates(amateur world premiere). He has previous experience stage managing for shows such as Jesus Christ Superstar.  Mehdi is working towards a BA in English from UC Davis.
 
Katie Halls is a third year Theatre and Dance and English double major at UC Davis. During her Ground & Field experience, she has portrayed Myra in the staged reading of [Un]Earthed, gotten to work on her playwriting, and devised her original piece for the festival. Some of her favorite theatre experiences in the past have been performing as Penny in Hairspray, Anne in Anne of Green Gables the Musical, Lucy in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, and being the captain of her improvisation team in high school. Her favorite things to do besides acting are reading, creative writing, and watching The Officeand Doctor Who. She wants to thank Mindy, Lisa, Joelle, and Tom for this fantastic experience in Ground & Field and is excited to share it with everyone.
 
Ashleigh Heer is delighted to return to the festival as a performer and now Production Assistant! When not onstage, this recent grad can be found unsuccessfully scouring the interwebs for theatre jobs that pay a living wage or laughing at her own jokes.
 
Anne Homer is a second year English and Theater double major. She has appeared in productions of Clue and Les Miserables, as well as numerous speech and poetry competitions. Qifan Huang is a fourth-year student who majored in Computer Science and Cinema and Digital Media at University of California, Davis. She is a lighting tech crew in Ground and Field Festival.
 
Aliya Hunter is a musician, a second year Gender Studies major, and a first-time assistant stage manager. She is very excited to be working with the cast and crew of Daisy Violet.You may have seen her as the cellist and stage manager of Parity.
 
Rose Kim spent her summer in Vermont as a resident artist at The Sable Project. As a performer she leans into somatics, energy. She is attracted to rehearsal processes that embody diversity and acknowledge the personal-political. She supports Black Power, Indigenous Sovereignty, and paying attention to anti-mainstream currents.  
 
Charles Lavaroni is a junior studying Theater and English. Quanqing Lin is a third year Theatre and Dance, Cinema and Digital Media, and Communication triple major at UC Davis. She is currently the lighting designer and lighting board operator in Chinese Theatre and Comedy Club. She is the tech crew focusing on lighting in Ground and Field Festival.
 
Shannon McCoy is a fourth year from Huntington Beach studying theatre and wildlife conservation biology. In this festival, she performed as Dr. Triona Fitton in Light Delayand Annabella in Kill the Wabbit. She is also involved in the devised piece, electrics, and run crew for Daisy Violet.
 
Stephanie Nielsen is a sophomore at UC Davis working towards degrees in managerial economics and theatre and dance. She has been dancing and performing for over 10 years. She is grateful to be able to stage manage Briseand Daisy Violet The Bitch Beast Kingin this year’s festival.
 
Tiffany Nwogu is a third year Theatre and Dance major and African American studies minor. She has appeared in Shakespeare’s Richard III fall quarter 2017; Marie Marie Marie Marieat UC Davis’ Dead Arts Society, Pecola in The Bluest Eyefor spring quarter 2018, and has won an award as part of best actor ensemble for the student film Fruit Punch. Tiffany is excited to be a part of this experience and is looking forward to future projects.
 
Rabiya Oberoi is a second year International Relations and English major, and has been performing since high school. She is passionate about creative writing, poetry, mental health advocacy and is currently in the process of writing a novel. This is her first year with Ground and field theatre festival.
 
Margarita Olmos is a third year Sociology and Theatre and Dance double major at UC Davis. With a main background in performance [un]Earthedwas her first experience as Stage Manager
 
Christiana Panicucci is a fourth year Human Development major at UC Davis with a minor of Theater and Dance. She is excited to be stage managing Summertimeat this year’s Ground & Field Festival.
 
Emile Rappaport is a fourth-year theater and dance student. In his time at UC Davis, he has studied theatrical and film arts. Last year he studied cinema in Paris, France, for four months, and he recently finished an internship at National Lampoon, LA. He plans to move to LA or attend grad school post-graduation.
 
Karina Rodriguez is a fourth-year theater and dance major who has been part of Ground and Field for two years. She has recently been in The Bluest Eyeand No Formula.
 
Patricia Sandoval is a third year Lingustics major who loves doing technical theatre during her free time. As luck would have it, she's the sound designer for Daisy Violet The Bitch Beast King. She wishes to thank everybody in GFTF for their support (and boundless energy!) during this journey.
 
Andrea Varela is her fourth year at UC Davis working on getting her degree in Theatre and Dance with a minor in Education and Human Development. She is thankful to have a chance to stage manage A Punchline and assistant stage manage Summertimein this year's festival.
Welcome to Our Second Season
What you’re about to see is the culmination of a uniquepartnership between professional writers and directors, emerging theatre artists, and world-class scholars. New play development is a messy, exciting, and gloriously rewarding creative collaboration. New play festivals have the principal purpose of developing new theatre and new playwrights, and to offer solid ground in which the work can take root and grow. Our student Ensemble has worked tirelessly during the last month in a conservatory-style intensive and has offered their talents to the seven playwrights selected for this season, working on two table reads, three public readings, and now two plays receiving their first productions!
We believe that our community, and the incredible work and research happening in Davis provide fertile ground for powerful, relevant narratives to take root and flourish. Our specific mission is not only to cultivate new works, but to cultivate new works of theatre that build narrative and discourse around issues of sustainability, the climate crisis, and that encourage interrogation of process and practice with the intention of building towards more sustainable theatrical models.
Thank you for being here. Your presence is a vital ingredient in the creative collaboration with the playwright as they continue to develop the work that you are about to see this evening. So laugh, sigh, cry...and enjoy the show!

“Breaking the mirror is sometimes a lullaby.”

There’s a reckoning that happens sometimes in your 30’s—at least for me it was in my 30’s—where you take a cold, analytical look at your life choices and take some measurements.  I’m not talking about wondering how your life has taken the particular turns it has or about comparing yourself to where your old classmates are—bank accounts, car makes and models, square footage and in what neighborhood, etc… 
No.  I’m talking about something deeper.  I’m talking about looking in the mirror and asking—“Does what I am doing matter?”  
As a theatre artist, what I do is so fleeting.  A bunch of people pour heart and soul into a work, collaborate (and sometimes battle), and finally we give all the energy we’ve put in to our audience.  We give it away.  All of it…  Sometimes it works.  Sometimes it doesn’t.  But either way at the end of the show the patrons go home.   And at the end of the run the family you’ve built parts ways.  Each performance is one of a kind, each journey unique and somehow the same.  And after countless shows (some which you are passionate about and some that, at the very least, gave you a paycheck) you look at your body of work and wonder if you’re just a cog in a machine, recycling old stories that prop up old ideas.  
It seems we’re in a national moment of reckoning.  Some seem to actively debunk the old mythologies and some of us cling to the stories of our upbringing like a baby blanket.  We fight against our apathy or succumb to it.  We find comfort in moving quickly into the future or we find it looking backwards in time.   But wherever we fall on the myriad of issues in the zeitgeist we are called to unpack them, dust them off, and reevaluate.  
These past two days, I had the privilege of being an audience member for two new works. The workshop performances of Summertime by Mark Rigby and Daisy Violet the Bitch Beast King by Sam Collier are radically different in style, but each provoke exquisite questions.  Summertime, directed by Tom Burmester, hilariously shines a light on the fragility of the middle class, the absurdity of American politics, and the uncomfortable reality that our values often take a backseat when we strive to care for our own.  Daisy Violet the Bitch Beast King, directed by Lisa Quoresimo, is a surreal romp though the female psyche.  The rules of femininity are laid bare as the audience wrestles to decide how many of these “rules” have been foisted upon us…and how many do we unconsciously perpetuate ourselves?  
GFTF’s Field Day culminates the festival in an offering of free theatre, Ensemble devised work, a community presentation on the intersection of climate change and theatre, and a demo of Play the Knave, an augmented reality video game for Windows that enables virtual design and performance of scenes from Shakespeare. This collaboration brings together playwrights from across the nation, integrates world class scholarship through partnership with the University, while guided by the next generation through its student ensemble.    Ground & Field Theatre Festival is an experiment in doing things differently.  We’re breaking the old structures of theatrical hierarchy.  Instead building our foundation on radical hospitality, radical introspection and flexibility, and building an ethos of ensemble both in our company and in our community.   Sometimes doing things in a new way is uncomfortable but as Daisy Violet so elegantly puts it, “Breaking the mirror is sometimes a lullaby.”  
Perhaps the most important partner this year has been the City of Davis itself.  The City shares GFTF’s mission to be both a reflection of our culture and a portal into a future we have yet to create. The Arts and Cultural Affairs program is weaving the arts into the fabric of our community by supporting a range of artistic endeavors that range from the familiar forms we love AND new forms that test the boundaries of the traditional.   The Civic Arts Commission creates Davis as a model of commitment to practices that we know are the foundation of a healthy society.  
As the festival comes to close and disappears into the memories in the hearts and minds of the audience my haunting question surfaces again: “Does what I am doing matter?”
I think it does.  I think we’re breaking new ground in Davis…partnering to make space for storytelling that matters.  
The experience of breathing, listening, and reacting as an individual and as a collective matters.  Being witness to the power of sound and imagery that will only be experienced this way once matters.  The opportunity to discuss art with the folks around you matters.  The ability to disagree about what you’ve just experienced but continue to be engaged in conversation matters.  Perhaps now more than ever. 
We are growing with our community and I can finally answer confidently…

Theatre and Dance ensemble (a Registered Student Organization with UC Davis Center for Student Involvement) is a coalition of graduate and undergraduate students at UC Davis engaged in projects that support student performances through promotion and production and serve as the advocacy group for undergraduate and graduate students in Dramatic Arts and Performance Studies. With guidance from key faculty in related departments, and support from stakeholders in the larger community, Theatre and Dance ensemble endeavors to fulfill its mission in the following three areas: 1. Support students through audiences and community engagement. We believe that research in theatre, dance, and performance requires a vital, active, and engaged audience and that the cultivation of such an audience is itself an intrinsic element of the artform. 2. Advocate for undergraduate and graduate students studying theatre, dance, and performance. Empowering student involvement in performance curation and course programming. 3. Provide production support for independent graduate or undergraduate student performances, in collaboration with the Department of Theatre and Dance.
